Cape York United Number 1 Claim (QUD673/2014)

On 15 May 2026, the State of Queensland, represented by the Department of Education, issued a notification under section 24JAA of the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth) (NTA) identifying that it seeks to construct fit-for-purpose staff housing for school teachers employed at Pormpuraaw State School, a public education facility on Lot 60 on SP276847 in Pormpuraaw. The affected lot that faces Korka Street Pormpuraaw is identified in the map below.

This notice is to advise that Cape York Land Council (CYLC) will facilitate a consultation with the State of Queensland (the ‘action body’), pursuant to s.24JAA(14) of the NTA with those people who hold or may hold native title rights and interests within the proposed project area. This meeting will provide an opportunity to discuss the proposed project and its potential impacts on native title rights and interests.

Purpose of this meeting:

The purpose of this meeting is for the action body to consult on the effect its project may have on the native title rights and interests of the project area.

The project area falls within an area that is subject to the Cape York United #1 (CYU#1) Claim. Cape York Land Council, as the legal representative of the Applicant in the CYU#1 Claim, will attend this meeting to provide legal and anthropological advice and support to those people who hold or may hold native title rights and interests in the project area.

Travel Attendance

CYLC has limited funding available for travel assistance to this meeting. CYLC may be able to provide some assistance, for example fuel reimbursement. CYLC will prioritise assisting elders and family representatives and will consider how limited funding can be allocated to support a broad representation of the affected Native Title Holders.
