NATIVE TITLE CLAIM GROUP MEETING

Thursday 16 July 2026, New Mapoon

Arma Legal (trading as KRED Legal Pty Ltd), the lawyers for the Applicant in the Gudang Yadhaykenu People Sea Claim (QUD357/2025) are holding a meeting for all members of the Gudang Yadhaykenu People Sea Claim Native Title Group.

The meeting will be held on Thursday 16 July 2026 in New Mapoon.

The purpose of this meeting is to update the native title claim group on the progress of the Gudang Yadhaykenu People Sea Claim and for the native title claim group to provide the Applicant with instructions on next steps in the proceeding.

Native Title Claim Group Meeting will be held as follows:

Who should attend the meeting?

The meeting is open to those Aboriginal people who are descendants by birth or adoption, in accordance with the traditional laws acknowledged and traditional customs observed by the Gudang Yadhaykenu Native Title Group, from one or more of the following apical ancestors:

  1. Wymarra (Wymara Outaiakindi);
  2. Tchiako (aka Chaiku/Chakoo) & Baki (siblings);
  3. Peter Padhing Pablo;
  4. Mathew Charlie Gelapa;
  5. Annie Blanco;
  6. Ila-Ela;
  7. Woonduinagrun & Tariba (parents of Tom Redhead);
  8. Charlotte (spouse of Billy Doyle and Wilson Ware)
  9. Pijame and Daudi (sisters);
  10. Mother of Thompson Olwinjinkwi; or
  11. Nara Jira Para.

Any person who is a descendant of one or more of the apical ancestors listed above is invited to attend the meeting. Please contact Cape York Land Council (CYLC) if you would like to confirm whether you are a descendant of one or more of the apical ancestors listed above and so entitled to attend the meeting.

Background

On 28 March 2025, members of the native title claim group for the Gudang Yadhaykenu People Sea Claim met in New Mapoon to discuss and authorise the Applicant to file a new native title determination application in the Disputed Area. A map of the Disputed Area is provided below.

On 5 June 2025, the Gudang Yadhaykenu People Sea Claim was accepted for filing in the Federal Court of Australia, and on 11 December 2025 it was registered by the National Native Title Tribunal.

Arma Legal is assisting the Applicant to prepare for a hearing before the Federal Court of Australia. The lay evidence portion of the hearing will be on Country in September 2026. Thus far preparation has included assisting with witness statements and evidence from Gudang Yadhaykenu People and your neighbours and obtaining expert evidence from Dr Anthony Redmond.

Purpose of the meeting

The purpose of this meeting is to:

  • (a) update the Gudang Yadhaykenu Native Title Group on the progress made by the Applicant on the Gudang Yadhaykenu People Sea Claim since October 2025;
  • (b) discuss next steps required to progress towards a hearing; and
  • (c) any other business

Arma Legal will discuss the work required to prepare for the hearing and provide an update and seek instructions on the steps to be completed in accordance with the indicative timetable set by the Federal Court.
