NOTICE OF WORKSHOP ABOUT PRESCRIBED BODIES CORPORATE

WESTERN YALANJI NATIVE TITLE GROUP

THURSDAY 23 APRIL 2026

CANCELLED DUE TO SORRY BUSINESS

CAIRNS

This notice is to advise that Cape York Land Council (CYLC) will convene a workshop on behalf of the Cape York United #1 (CYU#1) Claim Applicant on Thursday 23 April 2026 in Cairns for the purpose of providing information about Prescribed Bodies Corporate (PBCs) to the Western Yalanji Native Title Group.

Date: Thursday, 23 April 2026
Time: CANCELLED DUE TO SORRY BUSINESS
Venue: Rydges Esplanade Resort, 209-217 Abbott Street, Cairns

PURPOSE OF PBC WORKSHOP

The purpose of the PBC workshop is to provide information to the Western Yalanji Native Title Group about PBCs to enable the group to make informed decisions at an authorisation meeting.

The Native Title Act 1993 (Cth) (NTA) requires a PBC to be appointed by the Federal Court to represent native title holders whenever a native title determination is made. It is a matter for each native title group under the CYU#1 Claim to nominate an eligible corporation to be their PBC.

The Western Yalanji Native Title Group may choose to establish a new corporation or nominate an existing PBC to be the PBC for the proposed Western Yalanji determination area.

For an existing PBC to become the PBC for the proposed Western Yalanji determination, it must amend its rules to accommodate the new determination.

The Western Yalanji Native Title Group will be asked to nominate their PBC at the Authorisation meeting which is scheduled to take place on Friday 15 May 2026. No decisions are proposed to be made at the PBC workshop.

Representatives of the Western Yalanji Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC, and the Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations (ORIC) have been invited to attend and present. Staff from CYLC’s PBC Unit will also be in attendance.
