Northern Kaanju common law holder meeting
Ross on behalf of the Cape York United #1 Claim Group v State of Queensland (No 6) (Northern Kaanju determination) [2022] FCA 770
On 11 July 2017, the Peninsula Developmental Road Indigenous Land Use Agreement (PDR ILUA) was registered on the National Native Title Tribunal Register of Indigenous Land Use Agreements. This agreement was authorised to be registered by those people who held or may have held native title rights and interests in the PDR ILUA area. To date, 7 kilometres remain unsealed within the Northern Kaanju determination area.
On 8 April 2026, CYLC will facilitate a meeting for those common law holders subject to the native title determination Ross on behalf of the Cape York United #1 Claim Group v State of Queensland (No 6) (Northern Kaanju determination) [2022] FCA 770, to discuss the PDR ILUA and the continued performance of this agreement.
Representatives of CYLC and the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) will be available at this meeting to discuss the history, functions, progress and implementation of the PDR ILUA. A map is included (below) with this notice identifying the area of the PDR ILUA which overlaps the Northern Kaanju determination area.

Purpose of this meeting:
The purpose of this meeting is for Northern Kaanju common law holders to:
- be provided with an update on the PDR ILUA implementation;
- discuss the past, upcoming and proposed works that affect the Northern Kaanju determination area, and;
- consider and execute, if appropriate, the common law deed of assumption, which affirms the common law holders views and consent to the PDR ILUA.

Travel Assistance
CYLC has limited funding available for travel assistance to this meeting. CYLC may be able to provide some assistance, for example fuel reimbursement. CYLC will prioritise assisting elders and family representatives and will consider how limited funding can be allocated to support a broad representation of the affected Native Title Holders.
