NOTICE OF MEETING – WESTERN YALANJI NATIVE TITLE GROUP – Cape York United # 1 Native Title Claim (QUD673/2014)

This notice is to advise that the Cape York Land Council (CYLC) will convene a decision-making meeting on behalf of the Cape York United #1 (CYU#1) Claim Applicant on Wednesday 28 January 2026 for all members of the Western Yalanji Native Title Group in relation to the areas outlined in purple on the map below within the CYU#1 Claim. Details of this meeting are as follows:

Date: Wednesday 28 January 2026
Time: 9:30am – 3:30pm (Registration from 9am)
Venue: Cedric Davies Community Hub, 43 Anzac Avenue, Mareeba

Purpose of Meeting

The purpose of this meeting is:

(a) to consider, and if appropriate confirm a number of potential additional apical ancestors which make up the group description for the Western Yalanji Native Title Group; and

(b) for the legal representatives of the CYU#1 Applicant to discuss the next steps required to progress towards a determination of native title for the Western Yalanji Native Title Group.

Who is invited to attend the meeting?

All members of the Western Yalanji Native Title Group are invited and eligible to attend the meeting. If you are unsure as to whether you are a person who may attend this meeting, please contact CYLC’s Anthropology Unit.

As this is an important decision-making meeting, we strongly encourage all members of the Western Yalanji Native Title Group to attend. Consultant Expert Genealogist for the CYU#1 Claim, Kate Waters, will present on the apical ancestors and will also have availability to meet with families on request. The legal representatives of the CYU#1 Applicant will take instructions on the group description for Western Yalanji by way of resolution. In accordance with the applicable Federal Court timetable, the group description must be decided by Western Yalanji and provided to the State for final agreement in anticipation of a consent determination proposed to be held in the first week of July 2026.
