In December 2023, the town of Wujal Wujal was subject to the effects of Tropical Cyclone Jasper and its subsequent flooding event. The results of the cyclone and flooding left the community’s infrastructure damaged and in need of repair and/or replacement. Provided in the map below are the areas of Wujal Wujal that are proposed to be subject to an Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA), which will provide Native Title consent for works to be conducted in response to some of the effects of Cyclone Jasper. Works proposed to be included in the ILUA may include:
- building a carpark for the cemetery and extending the existing cemetery;
- rebuilding the council administration centre;
- rebuilding the art centre;
- repairing and extending the recreation hall;
- repairing the nursery centre;
- building council housing;
- repairing and extending the community garden;
- rebuilding and expanding the bike track;
- building a playground;
- building community barbecue facilities;
- building an SES shed; and
- developing a meeting place.
The proposed works fall wholly within the Cape York United Number 1 (CYU#1) native title claim. Cape York Land Council (CYLC) will be facilitating a second meeting in relation to this matter on 30 September 2025 for those persons who hold or may hold native title interests in the proposed works footprint area, as shown on the map below.
