NOTICE OF CONSULTATION

Lot 14 on C179114 – Cooktown
Cape York United #1 Native Title Claim (QUD673/2014)

On 17 June 2025, Cape York Land Council (CYLC) received correspondence from Crown Law, acting on behalf of the Department of Housing and Public Works (DHPW), in relation to Lot 14 on C179114 in Cooktown (as shown on the map below in red). Lot 14 on C179114 falls wholly within the Cape York United #1 Native Title Claim (QUD673/2014) (CYU#1 Claim). In its correspondence, Crown Law advised CYLC of the following information:

  • Lot 14 on C179114 is currently held by the Burrigirrku Land Trust;
  • the DHPW is funding a project that proposes to deliver new social housing over five (5) leases on Lot 14 on C179114;
  • a cultural heritage assessment of Lot 14 on C179114 was undertaken in 2024.

This notice is to advise that CYLC will facilitate a meeting with those people who hold or may hold Native Title rights and interests within the CYU#1 Claim area subject to the DHPW’s social housing proposal on Lot 14 on C179114.

When: 10:00 am – 12pm

Venue: Lions Hall, 5 Charles Street, Cooktown QLD 4895

Purpose of this meeting:

The purpose of this meeting is for CYLC’s lawyer assisting the Registered Native Title Claimant of the CYU#1 Claim to provide information and take instructions in relation to:

  • the nature of the works proposed by the DHPW;
  • cultural heritage that may be affected with the area;
  • options available to progress the matter under the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2003 (Qld).
