WORKSHOPS ABOUT PRESCRIBED BODIES CORPORATE
Cape York United #1 Native Title Claim (QUD673/2014)
At the request of the Yiithuwarra Native Title Group and the Guugu Yimidhirr Native Title Group, the Cape York Land Council (CYLC) will facilitate further half-day workshops on Monday 18 August 2025 in Cooktown and Hopevale in relation to Prescribed Bodies Corporate (PBCs), on behalf of the Applicant in the Cape York United #1 Claim. The Native Title Act 1993 (Cth) (NTA) requires a PBC to be appointed by the Federal Court to represent native title holders whenever a native title determination is made. It is a matter for each native title group to nominate a corporation to be their PBC. Delegates from the Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations (ORIC) will be in attendance at both workshops to provide information and answer questions.
For the Yiithuwarra Native Title Group, a new corporation is to be established to be the PBC for the proposed Yiithuwarra determination. The members of the Yiithuwarra Native Title Group will be asked to nominate their PBC at the authorisation meeting the day after the PBC workshop on Tuesday 19 August in Cooktown. The Guugu Yimidhirr Native Title Group may choose to establish a new corporation or an existing PBC to be the PBC for the proposed Guugu Yimidhirr determination. For an existing PBC to become the PBC for the proposed Guugu Yimidhirr determination, it must first amend its rules and structure to accommodate the new determination. The Guugu Yimidhirr Native Title Group will be asked to nominate their PBC at the authorisation meeting which is taking place two days after the PBC workshop on Wednesday 20 August in Hopevale.
