EPMs 28287 and 28288 – PacGold Ltd Olkola Determination (QUD 673 of 2014) & Kunjen Olkol Determination (QUD 673 of 2014)

This notice is to advise that Cape York Land Council (CYLC) will facilitate a meeting for people who hold native title rights and interests in the proposed Exploration Permits for Mineral (EPMs) 28287 and 28288 area (as shown on the map below). On 21 September 2022, the Department of Resources provided a section 29(7) notification for EPMs 28287-8, held by PacGold Ltd, as acts that attract the expedited procedure. On 29 August 2023, the Department of Resources removed the expedited statement, and the right-to-negotiate procedure now applies. The working group comprised of nominated Olkola and Kunjen Olkol representatives have instructed that both Native Title Parties and PacGold Ltd should come together at this meeting to discuss this matter.

Purpose of this meeting:

This meeting is for those affected Native Title Holders to:

  • discuss section 31 of the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth) (the normal negotiation procedure);
  • table the proposed negotiation principles;
  • discuss cultural heritage that may be affected within the EPM areas;
  • provide instructions to CYLC, where appropriate, to progress this matter; and
  • discuss the project further with PacGold Ltd.

A representative of PacGold Ltd will be available at this meeting to discuss its project.

Travel Attendance

CYLC has limited funding available for travel assistance to this meeting. CYLC may be able to provide some assistance, for example fuel reimbursement. CYLC will prioritise assisting elders and family representatives and will consider how limited funding can be allocated to support a broad representation of the affected Native Title Holders.
