Cape York United #1 Native Title Claim (QUD673/2014)
On 6 February 2025, the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) issued a future act notification under s.24KA of the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth) (NTA) to the Applicant of the Cape York United Number 1 Native Title Claim (QUD673/2014) (CYU#1 Claim). This notification identified that DTMR is seeking to undertake engineering works through the use of rock bolts and mesh to stabilise an existing slope along the Mulligan Highway at the Byerstown Range (shown on the map below in pink).
Cape York Land Council (CYLC) will facilitate a meeting with those people who hold or may hold Native Title rights and interests within the CYU#1 Claim in the area shown on the map below in pink.
The meeting will be held as follows
Who: People who hold or may hold Native Title rights and Interests in the Byerstown Range section of the Mulligan Highway

Time: 11:00am – 12:00pm
Venue*: Cooktown Events Centre 3 May Street, Cooktown QLD 4895

The purpose of the meeting:
The purpose of this meeting is for CYLC to provide information on the s.24KA notification and take instructions, if appropriate, in relation to:
- cultural heritage that may be affected within the area of the engineering works proposed by DTMR;
- the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2003 (Qld) and the management of cultural heritage; and
- comment to be provided pursuant to s.24KA(7) of the NTA, if required.
