Olkola Determination (QUD 673 of 2014)

This notice is to advise that Cape York Land Council (CYLC) will be facilitating a meeting for those Olkola people who hold native title rights and interests in the area of Exploration Permits for Minerals (EPMs) 28395 and 28490 (as shown on the map below. On 10 May 2023, the Department of Resources issued a notification under section 29(7) of the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth) (NTA), identifying that EPMs 28395 and 28490 are acts that attract the expedited procedure. It was proposed that this matter progress by way of a preliminary cultural heritage survey, which is no longer an available option. This meeting is to discuss options to progress this matter.

Purpose of this meeting:

This meeting is for those affected Native Title Holders to:

  • consider the options to progress this matter under the NTA, Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2003 (Qld) and Mineral Resources Act 1989 (Qld);
  • discuss the effects exploration within the EPMs may have on cultural heritage within the EPMs; and
  • provide instructions to CYLC, if appropriate, to progress this matter.

Travel Attendance

CYLC has limited funding available for travel assistance to this meeting. CYLC may be able to provide some assistance, for example fuel reimbursement. CYLC will prioritise assisting elders and family representatives and will consider how limited funding can be allocated to support a broad representation of the affected Native Title Holders.
