[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1528435897446{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]The Dhubbi Warra Aboriginal Corporation, together with the Hopevale Congress Aboriginal Corporation and Walmbaar Aboriginal Corporation, administers land on behalf of the Gamaay people. The Gamaay’s ownership was recognised by Hopevale determination of December 2007.
This determination arose from a claim made in June 1996 on behalf of 11 Hopevale clans. These clans were later joined by two other clans. Together they agreed to form a body called the Hopevale Congress of Clans, comprising one representative of each of the clans. Following a series of mediations, several internal issues between the applicants were resolved. In particular, the delimitation of some clan boundaries was agreed upon.
Both the state of Queensland and the Hopevale Aboriginal Council recognised that the Congress of Clans was an appropriate body to claim native title. This recognition was formalised in a Deed of Agreement, created between May and November 2007. This recognition was important as the land being claimed had been granted to the Hopevale Aboriginal Council in 1986 to be held on trust for the Aboriginal inhabitants. All parties agreed to recognise the Gamaay’s native title rights and interests. This agreement was affirmed and approved by the Federal Court in December 2007.
