Cape York Land Council (CYLC) will hold an information meeting on Monday 17 June 2024 in Injinoo with members of the Northern Cape York #1 (NCY#1) Native Title Claim Group about certain parts of lots 3 on SO87, 30 on SP318400, 58 on SP 323446, 66 on SP 273364, 700 on SP 273363, 7 on SP 273361, 102 on SP 120089 and 43 on SP 104552. These lots have been identified by the Northern Peninsula Area Regional Council (NPARC) as locations for the use and/or proposed expansion of existing gravel pits as shown by green dots on the below map. The gravel pits (with minor exceptions) are located on land where native title is recognised under the NCY#1 Native Title Determination.
Who is invited to attend the meeting?
The information meeting is open to all members of the “NCY#1 Native Title Claim Group” (as defined in the determination of native title made by the Federal Court in Woosup on behalf of the Northern Cape York Group #1 v State of Queensland (No 3) [2014] FCA 1148). Please contact CYLC if you would like to confirm whether you are a member of the NCY#1 Native Title Claim Group and so entitled to attend the meeting. Please note that representatives of NPARC will be in attendance to provide further information and answer any questions.
The meeting will be held as follows:
Date: Monday 17 June 2024
Venue: Injinoo Hall, 54 McDonnell Street, Injinoo, Queensland 4876
Time: 5.00pm – 8.00pm
The purpose of the meeting is to provide information about:
the current Federal Court proceeding challenging the validity of a notice concerning the gravel pits purportedly issued under section 24KA of the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth) by NPARC on 12 September 2023; and
- a proposed Indigenous land use agreement (ILUA) between NPARC and Ipima Ikaya Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC (ICN 8114) (IIAC) on behalf of the NCY#1 Native Title Claim Group in relation to the gravel pits, including but not limited to things such as protection of cultural heritage, compensation, rehabilitation (of gravel pits), native title validity and proposed areas of expansion of gravel pits. If NPARC and IIAC reach agreement in principle about the proposed ILUA, CYLC will notify a further meeting of the NCY#1 Native Title Claim Group in order to consult with native title holders about to the proposed ILUA and, if appropriate, to consent to it.
If you have queries about this information meeting (including more precise information about the location of the gravel pits), please contact Jen Ryan on 1800 623 548 or jryan@cylc.org.au. Note that there is no funding available for travel assistance. Video-conferencing facilities will be made available at the meeting. If you would like CYLC to arrange a video-conference so you can attend the meeting, whether you live at the location of the meeting or elsewhere, please contact CYLC on the number or email address above well in advance of the meeting date.
