NOTICE OF CONSULTATION MEETINGS FOR LAMA LAMA NATIVE TITLE GROUP Cape York United # 1 Native Title Claim (QUD673/2014)

Cape York Land Council (CYLC) will hold consultation meetings on Monday 12 February 2024 in Coen with the Lama Lama Native Title Group to discuss a proposed Federal Court hearing in relation to the area shown on the map below (the Disputed Area) where the distribution of native title rights and interests is disputed between the Umpila and Lama Lama Native Title Groups within the Cape York United #1 Claim (CYU#1 Claim). CYLC will also discuss, at a separate meeting on the same day, a proposed Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA) for Lama Lama Native Title Holders in relation to a proposed gravel lease to Cook Shire Council and other proposed future acts.

Purpose of the meeting regarding the Disputed Area

The purpose of the meeting regarding the Disputed Area is for CYLC to provide an update on the status of the CYU#1 Claim in relation to the Disputed Area, for the Lama Lama Native Title Group to meet with the independent solicitors proposed to represent the Lama Lama Native Title Group, and to discuss next steps required to progress towards a Federal Court hearing, including taking instructions from the group as to nomination of Lama Lama Native Title Holders to represent the Lama Lama Native Title Group.

Purpose of the meeting regarding the proposed ILUA

The purpose of the meeting regarding the proposed ILUA is for CYLC to:

(a) provide an update on the status of the proposed ILUA; and

(b) to seek instructions from those Lama Lama Native Title Holders who were nominated to instruct CYLC in relation to the proposed ILUA, if required.

Who is invited to attend the meetings?

The meetings are open to all descendants by birth, or adoption in accordance with traditional law and
custom, of one or more of the following apical ancestors:

  9. Jerry Crowbar;
  10. Dyatu (spouse of Kuwarwar);
  11. Echo Hart;
  12. Jimmy Jealous;
  13. Frank Kerr;
  14. Kuwarwar (spouse of Dyatu);
  15. Harry Liddy Snr (Ngaakamburu);
  16. Maurice (Thowandya) (father of King Armstrong and Old Lady Possum aka Possum Maurice and Jack Whip);
  17. Monkey Port Stewart (Aakurru Yintyingka);
  18. Nellie Frank Salt;
  19. Rosie Parker (spouse of Johnny Tableland);
  20. Peter (Ko’ayi) and sister (mother of Ko’omithya)
  21. Pompey Port Stewart (aka Bimbi);
  22. Willy (Purrwal);
  23. Frank Salt Snr (Rawangawal);
  24. Albert Tableland;
  25. Jack Tableland;

Any person who is a descendant of one or more of the apical ancestors listed above is invited to attend these meetings. Please contact CYLC if you would like to confirm whether you are a descendant of one or more of the apical ancestors listed above and so entitled to attend the meetings.
