Cape York Land Council (CYLC) will hold a consultation meeting on Tuesday 13 February 2024 in Lockhart River with the Umpila Native Title Group to discuss a proposed Federal Court hearing in relation to the area shown on the map below (the Disputed Area) where the distribution of native title rights and interests is disputed between the Umpila and Lama Lama Native Title Groups within the Cape York United #1 Claim (CYU#1 Claim).
Purpose of the meeting
The purpose of the meeting is for CYLC to provide an update on the status of the CYU#1 Claim in relation to the Disputed Area, for the Umpila Native Title Group to meet with the independent solicitors proposed to represent the Umpila Native Title Group, and to discuss next steps required to progress towards a Federal Court hearing, including taking instructions from the group as to:
(a) nomination of Umpila Native Title Holders to represent the Umpila Native Title Group in the Federal Court hearing regarding the Disputed Area; and
(b) discussing and confirming the independent lawyers proposed to represent the Umpila Native Title Group in the Federal Court hearing regarding the Disputed Area.
Who is invited to attend the meeting?
The meeting is open to all descendants by birth, or adoption in accordance with traditional law and custom, of one or more of the following apical ancestors:
- Charlie Captain;
- Puyalkuupi (first husband of Emma Clarmont);
- Ampulukuupi and his wife Wukaaka;
- Annie Wapun Matty;
- Jimmy (father of Douglas Ropeyarn);
- Tommy Clarmont;
- Topsy Clarmont;
- Charlie Clarmont;
- Lizzie of Night Island;
- Chaaminchunyu (aka Tommy Thompson and Tommy Nebo (Nipu));
- Yi’alma;
- Mother of Charlie Bezai;
- Emma (later Woodward);
- Kaputhana;
- Mary Ann Kamanmutu;
- Frank Port (Nangkayunumu);
- George Rocky 1 Marrakañtyinhu aka Old Jack Rocky)
- George Rocky 2;
- Johnny (father of Johnny Tayku Clarmont); or
- George Clarmont and his sister Miriam Clarmont.
Any person who is a descendant of one or more of the apical ancestors listed above is invited to attend the meeting. Please contact CYLC if you would like to confirm whether you are a descendant of one or more of the apical ancestors listed above and so entitled to attend the meeting.
